History class again, and I was stuck sitting and listening to Professor Balboa talk about the fact that the houses have always had tension. That the tension has grown in recent days. I already knew this. That’s why my father ended up dead, after all.

Professor Balboa said, “House Ghadeer, of India, has their main headquarters – their school, if you wish to view it that way – in Delhi. However, they have a great reach, and they can be found even in China! These shifters have been rather conservative in their attempts to broaden the reach of their house, but they are dangerous enemies if you cross them. They put most of their efforts in defense, secrecy, economic power, and independence.”

I jotted it down in my notebook, shorthand, and absently tried not to stare at Cassandra, who was sitting beside me.

“House Amin has their main headquarters in Egypt. They have control over all of Africa and are still thriving on the troves of gold and other resources harvested long ago. This house was once the most powerful. It has found balance in the last hundred years, forming a large standing army and quelling in-fighting enough to maintain stability. They are trade partners with House Blackstone,” continued Professor Balboa.

He took a few steps forward, closer to the chairs. His gaze flicked from student to student, trying to ensure that everyone was listening. Because many of his lectures could border on the dry side, he was always on the lookout for students that might not have been paying attention.

Professor Balboa explained, “We are part of House Blackstone, which is centered in the United States. Despite being incredibly wealthy, they are nearly at the bottom economically. Larger numbers of potential fighters keep them competitive, however, so they are essentially tied with the other houses, if less respected. Presently, in-fighting has weakened Blackstone’s standing.”

That sent up a round of people talking. It seemed as though even mentioning that we weren’t at the top of our game was enough to have some of the others unhappy, and the professor was the victim of many foul looks.

He didn’t acknowledge any of them. This was clearly not the first lecture that he had given about House Blackstone’s failing standings in the economic field. He didn’t mention the fact that our prime alpha was dead.

My father.

Something bitter twisted in my chest.

I didn’t know the guy. I had never known the guy. But knowing that he had been killed for something like a title, it made me sick.

Not even killed.

Culled.

Like an animal.

Professor Balboa kept talking, explaining, “House Montez is the least powerful family, but has the singular most powerful fighters. They are just fewer in number due to a few wars. They are not quite allies with anyone, but no violence between Montez and Blackstone has occurred in over a century, though there is still bad blood from the war between Montez and Blackstone in the late 1800s.”

Cassandra said, “My father told me that the head of Montez, Diego Vanderbluth, was talking about wanting to expand.
